On the exterior, The Elephant’s Trunk in Emmaus may seem like your average consignment shop - but take a step inside and you’ll find out that it’s anything but! From the way the store is run to the merchandise it sells, The Elephant’s Trunk isn’t something you come across every day.

It’s actually not a business... It’s a nonprofit organization that benefits Planned Parenthood of Northeast and Mid-Penn. Affairs at the store are kept running smoothly by a group of nearly 50 volunteers who donate their spare time to help this cause. 

Established in 1980 by Susanne Burkholder, was designed as a fund-raising mechanism after the government cut funds for family planning agencies. Since that time, the organization has moved from location to location throughout Emmaus, transferred management and gained more support and merchandise. Over the years, The Elephant’s Trunk has given more than $600,000 to Planned Parenthood - thanks to the hard work of their volunteers, their generous consignors, and their supportive customers! 

So, why else is The Elephant’s Trunk unique? Well, The Elephant’s Trunk doesn’t go by the book like most other consignment shops - selling used books and clothing - but branches out into pictures, appliances, furniture, kitchenware, jewelry, silver, and so much more, so everyone can find what suits his or her taste. And, when you do find what suits your taste, you can be sure it’s the highest quality and it’s at a reasonable price!
