Grab Some Good German Food at Dunderbak's Cafe

This little restaurant in the Lehigh Valley Mall puts its own spin on traditional German favorites.

If you’ve ever been to the Macy’s side of the Lehigh Valley Mall, you’ve probably smelled the wafts of sauerkraut and potatoes coming from Dunderbak’s Café. This little restaurant features a wide variety of German food (hey, all you Pennsylvania Dutch!) and imported beers. Plus, there always seems to be polka music playing.

On the menu, Dunderbak’s is known for their hearty, meat-filled sandwiches. Some popular ones include Bier Bologna, Liverwurst and the Grilled Reuben (and if those aren’t big enough, you can check out their Double Decker Mealwiches). And their hot, chunky soups (like Dutch Corn Chowder, Bavarian Mushroom, or Bean & Sausage) are always a popular choice.

In addition to soups and sandwiches, Dunderbak’s features a bunch of Wursts (like Smoked Kielbasi, Knockwurst, and Cajun Cheddar Wurst) and other munchies (like Potato Pancakes, Pierogies, and Deep Fried Pickles). And for those of you who don’t love German food, don’t worry – there are plenty of other sandwiches, wraps, and salads to satisfy.

Plus, if you’re looking for a full meal, Dunderbak’s also has a list of entrées like Halupkies (stuffed cabbage rolls), Beer Battered Cod, and Meatloaf.

Finally, if you’re a beer lover, this is the perfect place to try a few new ones. Dunderbak’s beer selection is fantastically vast – with over 75 beers from Germany, Belgium, England, the United States, and several other countries.

My meal: An Abbey de Leffe Blonde beer (from Belgium) and a Rachel sandwich (corned beef, Cole slaw, Swiss cheese, and 1000 Island dressing). I’d never had a Rachel before, but I must say – it was pretty delicious. The service was a little slow, so I’m going with a 4.5/5 for this place.
