For a Good Breakfast, Darto's is Worth a Visit

This little hole-in-the-wall in Bethlehem serves up feel-good food at a fantastically low cost.

Darto’s, a row-home-turned-restaurant, has become one of my favorite places to grab breakfast. Nestled into the residential side of West North Street, it’s quick, cheap (coffee is only 80 cents!), and comfort-food delicious. Plus, the waitresses are refreshingly laid-back and friendly.

When you walk in, you’ll get an immediate sense of nostalgia. Homemade donuts are displayed on an antique glass pedestal, the wooden ceiling beams are strung with pine branches, and there are vintage signs and pictures along the wood panel walls. The nine booths sport worn (and often slanted) wooden tables clad with menus, old-fashioned bottles of ketchup, and creamer pitchers. It’s a first-come, first-served kind of place, so if the booths are taken, there’s always the handful of seats at the bar where you can see right into the kitchen.

For such a small place, the menu at Darto’s is vast. There are plenty of egg dishes to choose from (like the long list of sandwiches that start at a buck-and-a-half), an array of pancakes (like banana or blueberry), French toast, and a section of sides (like warm sticky buns, oatmeal, or cold cereal). And for lunch, there are about 30 sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs to indulge in (all of them under $4.50), like the tuna melt, grilled bacon and cheese, or veal parmesan.

My meal: a Western egg sandwich (ham, onion, and green peppers), home fries, and wheat toast. The food was great and we were in-and-out in half an hour, so I have to give Darto’s a 5/5.
