Dick's Sporting Goods Stops Selling Some Rifles

National chain Dick's Sporting Goods announced Tuesday that it will stop selling modern sporting rifles in response to the Newtown, Conn. mass shooting

Dick's Sporting Goods, which has several stores in the Lehigh Valley, has suspended sale of some rifles in the wake of Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The company released this statement on Tuesday:

"We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.

Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.

We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy."

What do you think of the company's decision? Tell us in the comments section below.

Lets just use logic here... Lets just say that the gvmt does come to take you away.... WTH are YOU going to do with your little pitiful ar-15, and Tupperware container of bullets, when they will blow you away from 6 mile away with a maverick missile?? YOU will DIE... with your AR-15 in your hand. But that's the extreme view... NO soldier in this the Military of the united states is going to turn his weapon on the general population... If you believe otherwise.. then you are seriously in need of help. and have NO faith in the men and women of the armed forces of this country... you should be ashamed, for I am ashamed OF you. This is NOT Cambodia, or Russia, in those case you had people, read SOLDIERS, who were also not used to FREEDOM, and turned on the promises any dictator could or would make... OUR soldiers are smarter, and proud of the american system, way of life, and if you think that they would turn on the american people (purposefully) then you sir are an embarrassment.

Cjmmjc, Comming from you, we take that as a compliment. You are right, Dick's has the freedom to sell whatever they want. We also have the individual right to decide whether or not to spend our money there. I will not.

The level of complete disrespect and venom displayed on this thread is startling. And a little scary. It's sad that in this country if you choose to disagree with on item in the agenda of either side you are branded either a pro Obama liberal or a tea party loving right wing nut job. I also find it alarming that the thread started with people who were CERTAIN that Lanza was not carrying an assault rifle. Which was the weapon used to murder every child. In seconds. Were you just hopeful they were killed another way and more concerned about gun rights than the truth. Then someone posted a detailed description of the ammunition used, when not one shred of evidence exists showing what ammunition was used. Nor has any autopsy report been completed. Strange. Can only lead one to believe you are trying to minimize the power of the weapon. Most concerning is the belief that a fully armed citizenry makes us somehow safer. Patently false and has been debunked by the Stanford Law Review. Please read attached. It's not from the NRA or the Brady group. But it clearly shows that all the arguments used to show an armed citizenry will make us safer is an outright lie. http://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2240&context=fss_papers
