The Best job in Emmaus Offers no Pay

This is what you don't know, and should, about being a crossing guard in your neighborhood.

I bet you don’t know that some of the current crossing guards started when their children were at Lincoln or Jefferson (some over 40 years ago). Many cover several shifts, due to a shortage of crossing guards. They continue to help, every year because of their dedication to volunteering in their community. Wouldn't it be nice to lighten their load and do exactly what they did, when their kids were going to elementary school -- and volunteer! There are several intersections that currently have no crossing guards.

I know that there are wonderful parents out there, who walk their kids to and from school, who could leave 20 minutes earlier to give back to our great community.

Being a crossing guard allows you to get to know the children and families in your town. The crossing guard is also another set of eyes, making sure the children in our neighborhoods arrive safely at school. You also will teach by example the importance of volunteering, by showing how to look beyond ourselves to help others.

When there are no crossing guards working in an intersection, children have a very hard time crossing in morning rush hour traffic. I know that I have been almost hit several times crossing 3rd and Harrison, and I am an adult! Some kids dart between buses and parked cars, which is very dangerous, and most are between the ages of 6 and 10. If you can volunteer 20 minutes a week (and I know you can), it would make a big difference in the lives of the children of your community.

If you can volunteer your time as a crossing guard, please contact Cindy at the police station (610) 437-5252.
