Veterans Groups Honor Soldiers in Old Zionsville
Macungie VFW and Vietnam Vets lead special service in cemetery at Zion's Lutheran Church.
Following the Sunday service at , Old Zionsville, parishioners gathered in the memorial garden of the church’s cemetery. There, the Macungie Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Memorial Post 9264 and Veterans of the Vietnam War Post 75 led a brief service of remembrance May 29 to honor all those who have fought to defend the United States of America.
A wreath and American flag were placed in front of the garden for the veterans who fought on foreign soil and never returned home. Three carnations were also placed with the wreath: a red, which represents the blood spilled by comrades and the courage of the soldiers; a blue, which represents eternity, and a white, to represent purity.
Five members of the VFW shot three volleys into the air to honor all of America’s fallen soldiers. Bugler Chuck Jackson concluded the ceremony with the playing of “Taps.”

Following the service, attendees were encouraged to go forward to receive a shell casing from one of the fired rifles. They were instructed to cherish it and care for it by keeping the shell casing polished and shiny, and to remember its significance.
