I remember 60 years ago I was a kid the neighbor kids looked forward to this yearly event. You had to buy tickets to get food at the food stand. We loved to pitch pennies on a board that would win you more pennies when you hit the right numbers. Those days we didn't have many pennies. The next day we would go to the area where they removed the board in hopes of finding a few pennies that were missed. The old folks sat on benches and listened to the Allentown Marine Band. They also had a cake walk where you walked on boards and when you stopped if you were on the right board you could win a cake . Seventy years ago they also used the park as a local farmers market where my mom , a farmers daugher of John Shelly, met her husband Albert Weaver while helping her father sell his produce.

Ronald--we're still pitching pennies! (which is a Homecoming favorite for people of all ages) And, there's always a cake walk. We've tried over the years to keep all of the traditions of the Homecoming that have made it a favorite in Vera Cruz. Green benches to sit on to listen to music.......homemade food.....delicious baked goods... Our Homecoming book this year has a special section on history with some great photos from around the time period that you described.

We've gotten word that the Vera Cruz Community Association could use a few more volunteers on Sunday at the Homecoming. If you or your organization can help out, please contact jennifer.marangos@patch.com.
