Tell Us: Do You Get Enough Sleep?

Lack of sleep boosts stroke risk in people over 45, new study says

Don't lose any sleep over this but ...  healthy, normal-weight people may be at risk of stroke if they get less than six hours of sleep a night, according to a new study reported on by MSNBC.

Sleep is just as important as diet and exercise for people over 45, the study says.

Do you get enough sleep and, if so, how do you manage it? Vote in our poll and tell us in the comments below.

Seven to nine hours is the recommended daily amount of sleep but most of us get less than that, says a recent government health report.

I WISH I could get enough sleep! I'm 47 yrs old and only get about 5 hrs of sleep each night - and on top of that, the 5 hrs is interrupted by horrible hot flashes (every hour or so). This has been going on for approximately 8 months now. Needless to say, menopause sucks!!!!!! But then again...that's a whole other topic! lol

I know what you mean Sunday, I sleep in intervals, maybe a few hours at a time.

Sunday, you should see your doc, there are meds that will coast you through the big M. You shouldn't have to suffer.

When I was in my 20's - 50's I felt that sleep was a waste of time and way overrated! I'd go to bed for a few hours then get up and bake, do laundry, paint wallpaper, whatever project I was into. Night time was the best! So quiet, no interuptions, and I was never tired. My husband slept like the dead, as did my kids. Now that the kids are grown and gone I have discovered the wonderful world of sleep. I definately get 8 hours or more a night. I really think as our lives change our sleep patterns also do. As far as increase chance of stroke, I guess it is possible, but I would imagine that there are other factors involved like being a type A personality. It would be interesting to see the profiles of the group they are studying.

I need about 7 hrs of sleep a night to function. If I'm short-changed occasionally I'm ok, but I'm pretty worthless when I'm tired. So, in bed by 10:30 and up at 5:30 works well. Totally agree with Ms. Looby!
