Newspaper Covering Lincoln’s Death Cost $800

Emmaus resident collects newspapers published at times of presidential assassinations.

Several people brought newspapers and articles to last month for the sponsored by the . Most were not in good condition and not of great value. 

Charles Moyer, auctioneer and appraiser for Alderfer’s Auction and Appraisal, Hatfield said very few newspaper articles are worth anything, unless they would be of a presidential assassination, for example, and that would need to be the day of or the next day.

Then, along came Larry Kratzer of Emmaus. He had an issue of a Rhode Island newspaper dated April 16, 1865, and it was in very good condition.

Kratzer purchased the paper with Lincoln’s death announced in large, bold print across the front for $800. 

Moyer however, valued it at $500-$800, but said it may go back up as the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death approaches.

Kratzer said, “I am not disappointed at all. These things go up and down.” 

He said his hobby is collecting newspapers of only presidential assassinations. Kratzer also has in his collection newspapers from the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and James A. Garfield.
