Heavy Rain on the Way Thursday

By Steven DiMartino

A cold front will slowly settle south of the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas by tonight with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms.  The position of the cold front will allow an area of low pressure developing over the Upper Mid West to track to the south of New Jersey, producing periods of heavy rain tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Though tonight, overcast to broken cloud cover is expected with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms at times.  The thunderstorms will be rather weak with the potential for heavy downpours, occasional lightning, wind gusts over 30 mph, and small hail.  Winds will veer to the north at 5 to 10 mph by this evening as the cold front drops south.  Temperatures this afternoon will range from the upper 70's to lower 80's along the coast and lower to mid 80's throughout the rest of the region.

Tonight, showers and thunderstorms will become widespread towards morning.  Winds will veer to the northeast at 5 to 15 mph.  Temperatures will fall into the lower to mid 60's for lows.
