Goose Poop Still a Problem at Emmaus Park

Council outlawed feeding geese at Furnace Dam Park, but the birds haven't gone away.

It's been nearly a year since Emmaus Borough Council made it illegal to feed geese at Furnace Dam Park.

The borough had initially created an ordinance in 2008, but it was vetoed by the mayor. Over the next four years, he changed his mind, and feeding geese at the park became an offense punishable by a $300 fine.

How bad were things?

“Barely anyone wants to rent the pavilion because of the water fowl,” borough manager Shane Pepe said at the time. “There are goose droppings all over the park.”

But although the fowl's food source may have gone away, the geese—and their leavings—are sticking around, as the Express-Times noted this morning.

The borough is instead looking at more longer term options, such as seeking the help of a state or federal agency, beyond just keeping people from feeding the geese.

Of course, just having the law in place doesn't mean people have stopped feeding the geese

"As long as people take there kids and grandchildren down to feed them the birds will stay," reader Chris Foley wrote on the Emmaus Patch Facebook page. "I've seen them being feed on numerous occasions."
