Five Things to Know Today: July 12

T.G.I.F. What else is there?

  1. Did You Grab Your Umbrella? There’s a 70 percent chance of precipitation today, according to the National Weather Service. But, it’s summer and it might just LOOK like rain all day, right? Anyhow, forecasters are saying the potential for showers will increase as the day goes on and calling for a possible thunderstorm this afternoon. Highs near 80.
  2. Toot Your Own Horn: Are you active in some sort of community service or volunteer work in Emmaus or Upper Milford? Let me know at jennifer.marangos@patch.com and your good works may be highlighted in a future Patch story.
  3. Word of the Day: “Atrichias,” pronounced ey-trik-ee-uh or uh-trik-ee- uh, according to dictionary.com. The word, which is a noun, means a congenital absence or loss of hair. Try working that into your conversation today.
  4. Quote of the Day: “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” –William Shakespeare
  5. Today in History: On this day in 1862, the Medal of Honor for U.S. Army soldiers was instituted when President Abraham Lincoln signed a measure into law calling for its creation.
