Digging Out: What Emmaus Residents Should Know After a Storm

An Emmaus Borough ordinance sets up some clear rules about cleaning up after snow and ice storms in the borough.

Here's what residents of the Borough of Emmaus need to know about clearing their sidewalks and walkways following a snowstorm, according to the borough website:

  • All residents of the Borough of Emmaus must clear a 4-foot wide pathway in front of, or along the side of their property, where a sidewalk or walkway exists within 24 hours after it stops snowing. A similar path must be cleared after an ice storm.
  • Some of the back-breaking work of shoveling can be minimized by waiting to shovel driveways until after the plows come through to widen the street -- otherwise, it may be necessary to shovel out again.
  • Properties located on a corner have the responsibility of clearing a path from the sidewalk to the street.
  • When clearing snow or ice, do not throw it into the middle of the street. This can be dangerous for drivers of cars and plows.
