I've voted for Doug Reichley the past few elections including last time when he ran against Patrick Slattery. At the time I already had met Pat and genuinely liked the guy, but Reichley was a machine. I've always been impressed with the way he could remember names and faces. He was always very friendly the couple times I had a chance to meet him and I believe he was a great advocate for the community for a long time. For these reasons he always got my vote.
The upcoming special election for the 134th State House District is a big one. Who will replace the guy who held the seat for a decade? I am a Republican, but I very much employ a 'vote for the best candidate philosophy, regardless of affiliation.' I also trust my gut.
As mentioned above in regards to Reichley, when deciding who to vote for there are a couple characteristics I lean on heavily in local elections.
In local elections it's all about electing good people vs. party lines. My two primary attributes for defining a 'good candidate' in a local election are: 1. Honest ties to the community and 2. Intent.
After evaluating the two candidates my gut tells me to steer clear of Ryan MacKenzie. Here's why:
First I'm very disappointed the Republican Committee nominated the candidate with the least amount of ties to our community. At least two other candidates were better choices with real ties to and investment in our community.
Mackenzie has lived in Washington DC or Harrisburg the past 6 years. He is (though it's being challenged I believe) only eligible to run for office in the district because he's been using his parents address to maintain residency and has voted absentee in 10 of the last 11 elections. Huge red flags.
Secondly, I avoid "establishment candidates" who represent status quo. Status quo has put us where we are both locally and federally for far too long.
Next you have to ask about a candidate's motivation.
A candidate who worked in DC or Harrisburg for the past 6+ years and is supported by the establishment over better qualified local candidates, begs the question. Is this just a stepping stone? Is MacKenzie running because he gives a hoot about the community or does he have bigger political ambitions and this is the seat that happens to be open?
Slattery is extremely active in our community. When Mackenzie was off in DC/Harrisburg, Pat was here coaching at LMYA and serving on the Township Environmental Advisory Council. He has lent his voice fighting and going to bat for the Little Lehigh and on behalf of local residents united against the Jaindl development. He also helped a bunch of local people run for office (6 Republicans, 5 Democrats and 1 Independent). This clearly shows that he cares about our community and not party politics.
As per the issues, I do not want to short-change their importance, especially the broad reform topics PA MUST begin addressing.
Take the recent reform of unemployment (UC) compensation, for example. This is something I have long been on my soapbox about. Senate bill 1030 was passed nearly unanimously in a bi-partisan effort through both parties. An essential part of this bill is requiring people receiving benefits to show they are actively looking for work. On this important issue both parties get it (sometimes). On the big issues there is more agreement then disagreement. I'm tired of party line politics and talking points polarization. We need solutions! We need people who care, are invested and who are in it for the right reasons.
Due to a combination of my disappointment with the Republican nominating process, Slattery's ties to our community and a trust that he has what it takes to honestly tackle the difficult issues facing the commonwealth, Pat Slattery is getting my vote on April 24.

Well-stated, Mr. Beitler. In addition, the 29-year-old Mackenzie has an impressive education, but a VERY thin job resume including campaigning for Toomey, and a stint with the bureaucracy in Harrisburg.
Turnout for Slattery is especially important in this April 24 election, which also happens to be the Republican presidential primary.
That's not the end-point, however. As I understand it the winner on April 24 only gets to serve out the remainder of Reichley's term, which expires at the end of the year.
The ultimate winner will be decided in the November election, but there is no doubt April 24 is important.

The local connections definitely makes Slattery the better candidate. Mackenzie sound like the typical "establishment" man and he has little or no connections to the valley. The local Republican party machine picked Mackenzie over better local party candidates. Slattery deserves to win, not Mackenzie.

In this special election where Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike can cast their vote, I urge all to vote for Patrick Slattery. He is the most qualified candidate to serve as our State Representative as he has demonstrated his commitment to his community time and time again. Mr. Mackenzie is a questionable candidate on many levels and not as qualified as Mr. Slattery. Pat Slattery gets my vote and he should get the vote of all LMT and 134th residents.

The problem with Mr Slattery is that he stands for the status quo as far as the public sector is concerned. His entire support organization is teacher union members and supporters. When asked what he would do about the pension crisis, he said that he would have to study it, and didn't want to hurt any public sector workers. Well when the public pension bomb is going up $1 billion a year ad infinity in a 28 billion dollar budget, Mr Slattery has cast his lot with the public sector and made himself an enemy of the taxpayer. His work as business development officer at Kidspeace has resulted in their bankruptcy in 2011 with the pension being pawned off on the taxpayers through the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp. Why wouldn't he do that to our state, as he has said that he wouldn't address the pension issue.
Ryan Mackenzie has an MBA from Harvard and has worked in the dept of Labor and Industry and is talking pensions, waste, and welfare fraud,
I have spoken to him at length, and I am convinced that he will at least try to solve the issues of an out of control government, where Patrick seems hell bent on speeding the car up while skidding sideways at 120 mph towards the brick wall.

Slattery is clearly a business incompetent. On his watch as Director of Business Development, Kidspeace revenue has plummeted, and Moody's has rated their bonds JUNK. In addition, Kidspeace is trying to run away from their pension obligations because they can not afford them. These are facts, a Google search will confirm them. Kidspeace should fire the $100k+/year incompetents like Slattery. Do you want him to screw the Commonwealth the same as Kidspeace? Slattery has been rejected by the voters several times. It has come to my attention that poor Patrick is accusing people of stealing his signs. Slattery, file a police report if you have evidence, otherwise SHUTUP. This tired accusation happens every election. It has been windy, signs blew away, especially your tired old signs reused from your previous FAILED campaigns. Mackenzie's sign blew away in my yard and my first thought was not "OH MY GAWD, THEY ARE OUT TO STEAL SIGNS!", rather I looked in my bushes and found it. If this is how he is going to act, he will be completely ineffective in Harrisburg, and will spend all his time whining about people out to get him. We need people in Harrisburg who can save this Commonwealth from the fiscal mess left by Fast Eddie Rendell, not cry babies.

Actually, it is appalling to see the number of signs on Main Rd in Vera Cruz that are missing. About two weeks about I counted 15 signs. At the end of last week, half were missing and were "replaced" with Mackenzie signs. Such juvenile behavior! Why in the world would East Penn republicans stand behind someone from Parkland who has never lived in this district as an adult. He has no investment in the community. Patrick Slattery, on the other hand, has worked in many capacities in our community. He has proven that he is a candidate who will tackle issues and not play some dumb political polarization game. Where does poor Patrick stand on the real issues? He has no position.
1. How does the state attract more businesses?
2. How is he going to solve the public pension crisis?
3. Where does he stand on parental rights?
4. Where does he stand on school choice?
5. Where does he stand on property tax reform?
I could go on and on and on. Poor Patrick takes no position and offers no solutions. He and his apologists just whine about Mackenzie, or tactics or anything other than the issues. Meanwhile Mackenzie was working in Harrisburg saving the taxpayers $160-$180 MILLION DOLLARS. That's what I call working for me. The Ryan Mackenzie nomination is an insult to the people of the 134th district. Why would the state GOP demand that somebody this young and experienced run for the seat that had been held by Reichley? Doug Reichley was at least a local guy with kids in the school district and a serious interest in the community. Mackenzie basically graduated high school and then went out and became a yes man for Pat Toomey and Tom Corbett. He is now back claiming to be a local guy running for office. Are you kidding me? Kids peace handles thousands and thousands of youths a year. It's record is outstanding considering the volume and level of severity of issues/psychiatric/behavioral problems they handle. I know first hand the special kind of people these counselors are and what they face on a daily basis. (over 150 attacks on counselors reported over a year timeframe 2006-2007.) It's certainly not something I could do. I know people who worked there who are injured on a weekly basis from being punched/bitten/attacked. It takes a SPECIAL person to help these kids at KP who major and sometimes violent psychiatric issues.

2nd. I'm happy Pat is out in the public. It's a damned if he does damned if he doesn't viewpoint with some people. Since he's running for office every good thing he did the past decade in this community is now "glad-handing" or "photo-ops". You criticize for posting on Patch? I commend it. It's what politicians should be doing. I guess you would prefer him simply taking marching orders from the Democratic establishment as Mackenzie does with the R's.
Lastly, KP's financial issues. According to records released to Mcall "the agency cut its losses for 2011 and gained revenue." Furthermore, "the agency slashed costs on professional services, consolidated some operations and hired full-time doctors instead of relying on temporary ones — moves that cut $2.6 million from the budget."
Do you know what caused the issues? A major cause is declining gov't funding. Ok. This is what you all want? (And I agree with to a certain extent) Cut the gov't funding to Kidspeace. Thats whats happening and they are dealing with it. You can't have it both ways. You can't say "Kidspeace is funded by the gov't" knowing it's funding is being slashed but then say "Kidspeace is in financial trouble, it's all Slatterys fault" (which of course is a stupid generalization to make). But point is, you can't play both sides of the coin.
Lastly, let's say kids peace fails. (it won't) lets say it did. What happens to these kids then? Welfare system? Ya, that will be really efficient!

I AM thinking of those children. Let us get past Kidspeace. What I am trying to do is move the conversation to ISSUES. Why don't you address the issues? This is how you respond. Attack the messenger and not offer any solutions. All you say is you want to go meet people. What do you tell people you are going to do? What are the issues and what are your solutions? What's that??? Silence. No answers no solutions. I ask you to respond to the issues, and your only response is to say you want to stroke your ego and get more photo ops to satisfy your narcissism. Knowing that you struggle to see the truth I found it hard to believe that one person would be responsible for this, which according to today's paper is far different than what you explain. I noticed that Patrick is not the president of Kids Peace, not an officer, he's not on the board and that they have over 3000 employees. So if he is the director of business development, how exactly is he the only one that is responsible for this. Last time I checked boards are usually responsible for determining budgets. Directors are typically given budgets to work within. What kind of accountant are you?

Accusation: Mackenzie is 29 and has lived and worked in Camp Hill and Washington DC over the past 6+ years doing political work.
Response: Being young is now a crime? We need energy and new ideas not tired old recycled big government tax and spend ideas which I suspect Slattery advocates. Oh, and what was he doing in Camp Hill and Washington DC, working for us saving over $150 million. Oh, now Patrick wants to do politcal work, DUH!
Accusation: He voted absentee 10 of the last 11 elections
Response: He was away serving the people of this Commonwealth. Is Slattery saying absentee ballots don't count? I find this highly offensive as we have many brave men and women in the Armed Forces who vote absentee ballots all the time while serving away from home.
The fact that Mackenzie is legally registered in the 134th says to me THIS IS HIS HOME WHICH HE CARES ENOUGH ABOUT TO LEAVE FAMILY BEHIND AND FIGHT FOR US IN HARRISBURG.
Accusation: He is unmarried and has never paid property taxes.
Response: What? Are you people even remotely serious on this? Have you looked at your property values? They have plummeted over the last few years thanks to tax and spend and free money Washington(both D's and R's guilty). In my opinion, having avoided paying property taxes was fiscally astute, i.e. he understands economics. This is exactly the kind of person we need in Harrisburg. At EPSD, the "business manager" is the CFO. While I doubt that Mr. Slattery's position at KidsPeace is the CFO, I also doubt that anyone who was called a business manager would have " a job to make programs that match the needs of children". That would be in the purview of psychological, medical, educational, and social services professionals.
Little of that would be the function of a business manager. Depending on the breadth (and/or level) of a particular business manager's responsibilities, he might be in charge of paying the bills, collecting the receivables, preparing or analyzing budgets and financial statements, facilities management, h.r. administration, or even sales and business development functions. For a lower level manager, it could be only one of these functions.

On his website, I think the candidate fashions himself a "health care executive". We've also seen him called a business manager, which usually has profit/loss responsiblilty, or in the case of non-profits, the responsibility to maintain the viability of his organization. To be fair, some clarification of his actual responsibilities would be in order, from the candidate himself, in order to stop the questions and speculation.
I think he is following this discussion.......since he commented earlier when he tried to change any discussion about his professional record into an alleged attack on the 130 year old organisation. (see: Patrick Slattery,10:37 pm on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, "If anonymously attacking a 130 year old children's charity, KidsPeace, is what the MacKenzie campaign is about then I hope that the voters will clearly reject that type of behavior.") No one is doing such a thing - the problems at his employer are very well documented elsewhere in the press so people are naturally interested in his involvement.
He could have simply denied that he was involved in its problems by telling us what he really does there as a "health care executive".

1. Restore public trust in state government by embracing true transparency
and reign in wasteful spending. Simply stated, the government should only
do for its citizens that which the citizenry can not do efficiently or
effectively for themselves. • With one of the most expensive legislatures in the country next to California and New York coupled with multi-billion dollar budget deficits, we have plenty of work to do!
(NICE WORDS. SPECIFICALLY, WHAT WASTEFUL SPENDING HAVE YOU IDENTIFIED THAT SHOULD BE CUT?)
2. Concentrate on Education, Energy, the Environment and how these issues
interact with the Economy. A thriving Economy in the 21st Century is
generated by success in these three areas. A vibrant economy affords our
best opportunity to meet the needs of taxpayers, businesses, families,
children and seniors! • By shifting our concept of these issues as expenses or cost and looking at them as sound Investments in our future, we can begin to have real
debates about how to make the needed improvements in our public policy.

As far as honest ties to the community i somewhat disagree if someone is sincere and for all people rich, poor, white, black and everyone in between i dont care if they are from my town or from mars.Oh if the fact that mackenzie voted absentee in 10 of the last 11 elections raises red flags the fact that the person conducting the survey told me slattery only voted 40 percent of the time should also raise red flags

Arlene Dabrow was one I was referring to above as one of 2-3 choices who would have made more sense for the area. Local candidates who would have been a great nominee for the Republican Party. Sadly, they were overlooked for the insider. I *think Mackenzies father was a Republican Party chair (I'm not 100% sure I have to confirm this) at sometime.... If so, it's truly all about who you know....

arlene was very concerned about older residents and people in general. She would have been a good choice. I guess it is about who you know but the fact is voters have the power to go to the polls and change that, they just dont use it !

As long as she is not guilty of a felony like killing, hurting, stealing or cheating someone or destroying property i could care less. if we say we cant vote for someone who ran a red light or stop sign or texts or talks on the phone while driving or gets distracted by loud music or something they see along the road or who maybe speeds now and then we would not have anyone left to vote for. I do like that your willing to call voters crazy at least you say what you think so you get style points for being politicallly incorrect. Still to be such an insider kind of erases your style points sorry. oh and i may be crazy but its a good kind of crazy

Ya i know i was just trying to make a point as to the type of candidates i like. 1. politically incorrect 2. dont make promises you cant keep 3. dont use catch phrases or buzz words just say what you mean.4. dont look at polls and say what you think people want to hear, be truthfull. Stop laughing, i know i probally have a better shot at mega millions than finding such a candidate!!!!
