West Nile Virus Sickens Lehigh County Man

Pennsylvania has confirmed 7 human cases of West Nile Virus and one of the latest is a Lehigh County man.

A Lehigh County man is among seven Pennsylvanians sickened by West Nile Virus - an infection rate on track to exceed the most West Nile cases ever in the state by the end of the year.

"August and September are usually the heaviest months [for infections]," said Amanda Witman of Pa. Department of Environmental Protection. "We're on track to exceed our highest year ever."

Officials won't say what town or township the man is from. He is middle aged and was hospitalized with meningitis as a result of West Nile, according to the Pa. Department of Health. No further information on the man or his condition is available from state officials.

Out of 291 mosquitoes tested in Lehigh County, 71 were carrying West Nile so far this year. Four birds have tested positive, including two found in Upper Macungie Township.

Spraying to knock down mosquitoes took place in Upper Macungie and Lower Macungie and South Whitehall Townships this week.

Last year, Pennsylvania had seven human cases of West Nile, down from 28 cases in 2010.

Residents are urged to get rid of standing water where mosquitoes can breed on their property.

Kyolic liquid green Garlic will PREVENT bug bites. Seriously, a side effect of this odorless garlic is that bugs will not even land on you ! You can watch them hover but they will not land AND it helps lower blood pressure and will not interfere with any Meds you may be taking. Get it online or a local health food store.

It seems we are paying a price for uncontrolled development and townships willingness to approve poorly designed storm water retention basins. We are paying a price but that won't stop towns like Upper Macungie from approving every development that comes along. I guess they will just have to approve future developments knowing that West Nile will add to the death toll that their "planning" has already chalked up with their phony traffic studies and lack of traffic planning. What the heck, what's a few deaths compared to those building permit fees.

Even w/out the virus, the over-construction is sickening. Nature being horribly replaced by overcrowded roads, ticky-tacky homes, heightening & more violent crimes, etc, etc. Let all hear: all over the Valley, and the Poconos, people are NOT HAPPY with you twsps. doing so much ovebuilding !!!!

Why won't they divulge the town or township? Wouldn't that be a sensible and cautious action?

I think good point. Probably it's felt everyone, and all who get mosquito bites would panic.
