Tonight’s Emmaus Borough Council Meeting Canceled
The Aug. 6, 2012 meetings of Emmaus Borough Council and Council’s Budget and Finance Committee have been canceled.
The Aug. 6, 2012 meeting of Emmaus Borough Council has been canceled. Emmaus Borough Council normally meets on the first and third Mondays of the month.
Earlier this year council voted to hold only one meeting in July and one in August, based on the fact that the summer months are slower. The reduction in meetings saves the borough money, as staff does not have to spend time preparing material for council and the borough manager and borough solicitor to use during the meeting.
In July 2011, a motion by Councilman Mike Waddell to cancel the first meeting in August 2011 with only two weeks’ notice met with considerable debate, and ultimately the decision was made to keep that meeting on the calendar.
At that time, Councilman Brent Labenberg said that he would not be opposed to eliminating some summer meetings, but that he believed council should make borough residents aware of the summer schedule from the beginning of the year when the meetings are advertised and not do it on the fly.
Council followed the approach recommended by Labenberg in developing the 2012 meeting schedule, eliminating one council meeting in July and one in August.
The Budget and Finance Committee meeting scheduled for tonight has also been canceled.
The next meeting of Emmaus Borough Council is scheduled for Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. in Emmaus Borough Hall.
