A terrorist organization? Really? You do know that the NRA is a lobbying group right? You see what happens is that citizens join this group and then they represent their opinions in our government...

But I guess since they don't represent what you believe that they are terroristis. Even if what they are representing is something that is already protected by the constitution and the Supreme Court has rulled is an individual right separate from being part of a formal militia group... which liberals also like to label as terrorist groups.

My heart goes out to the lost brave souls, teachers, and children who lost their lives that dreadful day, and to all the families who have been affected. Tears run down my face and my heart aches literally. No words can express the grief and what they are going through. My condolences to each whether parent, friend or family member, and every person affected by this. The little girls and boys of Sandy Hook who lost their lives are all "Borrowed Angels" they're all in Heaven! Amanda Raiford and Family, Louisiana. All are in our prayers.

From England -- can I just say get a grip and stop random nutters like this guy getting hold of weapons. Its not rocket science. I know you will never stop hardened criminals getting hold of guns but they are not the people doing this sort of thing. How can those that support the NRA sleep at night!!! --- bewildered

News reports suggest the shooter's mother knew full well he was troubled. Yet she left unsecured weapons available to him. He didn't have to buy them or steal them. He just had to raid his mother's cache of weapons.

Kate Millen, its simply too horrific to even imagine such a scene. There really are no words to describe the grief and devastation these families and this community must be enduring. Its TRAGIC. This issue cannot be ignored. This is now a chronic scenario in the United States.President Obama visibly shaken has a buffet of issues on his desk but this gun issue HAS to be on top of the priority list. For all who lost their lives on that terrible terrible day may you all rest in peace. To the families and the entire community of Newtown the worlds thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the tired: get untired, - look at the faces of the children killed by the madman enabled by a society with a mass insanity/obsession with the guns in US.
This is no brainer - if you have so many certified nuts in the Nation - than there is only one solution - take all guns from all civilians - period.
Every civilized nation would do that.

It's not guns it's people. I have a right to defend myself. I have a right to hunt, I raise and hunt for my food. I don't want government approved food from the grocery store, I want to raise my own, and I also hunt for my food with my gun. Besides if a country would try to invade our country how will we protect ourselves? GUNS! That's why so many other countries don't invade our country, we are all armed. Our country needs to have harsher punishments to those who use guns for the wrong reasons. The death penalty. And the media needs to stop going on and on about these crimes on the news, internet, and in the papers. Where do people think kids get the ideas to kill others from??? They learn from what they hear and see on the news, internet, and news papers.

My youngest daughter, who also shoots with me, suggested this weekend to me that if the teachers were trained in shooting and carried a gun maybe one of them could have stopped the killer before he shot any kids. This coming from an 11 year old. How is it that adults like Kenc can't comprehend that??

AMEN! I just said that at work today, if some or all of the teachers were trained and carried a concealed weapons permits this could have saved some or all of them. People kill people, not guns. If it's not guns, it's some other weapon that people will use such as bombs, bows, knives, bats, vehicles. The list can go on. Why are people so focused on guns.

Perhaps quite a few adults are capable of comprehending that idea and are unconvinced that it's the best solution to the problem. Can you think of any potential negative outcomes from arming teachers?

Idea noted. Got any others or is that it?

What about childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes? Are the sweets that children eat not causing the same harm to the kids as they do adults? Many would contend that children eating lots of sweets is even more harmful because it sets them into a life long pattern of eating these high fat high caloric foods. Although the argument of they are only harming themselves does kinda work, until a kid's parents die of a heart attack at age 40 and leave that kid without a parent.

Wow I really care what people from Canada think about gun laws in the US, so thanks for weighing in there. Your opinion on US guns laws is a useful as a poopy flavored lolly pop.

Also We have a 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech and religion, those rights are equally as old, are those also no longer relevant due to age? Our founding fathers couldn't have foreseen TV, Radio, and the internet, should 1st Amendment protections not apply in those areas only in print and in person media?

You have a poor understanding of our Constitution then, and while I don't particularly care from which country you hail, I would appreciate it if you at least tried to understand our Constitution. It's a living document, meaning that it can change over time. Our founding fathers established with the Constitution a form of government that would last over time and could be adapted to fit those times.

However, the document itself is original, and the bill of rights was established so that the Constitution would not crumble like earlier governments. 2nd amendment included. Yes, many things have changed in society since 1791, but there again, we made provisions for those very changes. The SCOTUS decides constitutionality, meaning they hear cases and interpret the Constitution to decide what the best ruling would be. It's not always perfect, but it at least comes close.

I am not for banning guns, but I do think better legislation could be written to protect people. And those will be long discussions, as they should be. And, one would hope, bipartisan.

You do not care?:
Your loss,
- in all civilized countries - Canada, Europe & other, the opinion prevails is that your grotesquely powerful Gun Lobby and the Troglodytes (google this) who make up the NRA are mentally deviant and jointly responsible for the killings with guns that were recently perpetrated - most recently on 5-7 years little school children.

So... you just came out and said it didn't you, it is not an individual that killed these people... it was the NRA. I guess under that line of thinking you could just do whatever you want, it isn't your fault, it is everyone else's. That must be very reassuring for you.

But don't worry, I will sleep well knowing that I have ready access to my 12 gauge Mossberg here at home, and my Walther (carry permit) while I am away. I will also sleep well knowing that I am only responsable for my own actions, not everyone else's. Remember when seconds count, the police are only minutes away! Don't worry, they will make sure to get a description of what happened.

What really killed those children was the delusion that a "gun free" zone protects people. What do all of the recent shootings have in common? They were in gun free zones. Gun free zones are victim zones.

While the perpetrators of these horrible actions were most likely totally insane, they were not stupid. They picked places where they would be able to carry out their atrocity without fear of being stopped by an armed citizen. They also got what they wanted didn't they? Now look at them! Their action is on the news 24/7 and people will remember them!

That is all I have to say to you about this topic, now please keep your opinions of what parts of a governmental framework to ignore focused on Canada, we are able to manage our own country.

To John Fox

Your incoherent rumblings are acknowledged.
Good luck with managing your country.
Only 2 additional observations:
1) proliferation of your guns across the border to Canada makes me eligible to critisize the sorry state of affaires regarding the guns control in your society.
2) you might state one or any attempted mass murder in which the killer was successfully taken out by an armed citizen. There are none to my knowledge. Please explain why.

Disclosure - I was in a compulsory military service in Europe for 2 years, won few target shooting competitions in my unit and appreciate guns from that point of view, not from your twisted siege mentality state.

Merry Christmas to you and your 12 Gauge Mossberg and your Walther.

P.S. - You might also consider a refresher in correct English style, grammar and spelling should you wish to further disseminate your stellar quality opinions in writing.

Kenc, Are you European or Canadian? Just reading this thread it seems like you keep forgetting who you really are? If you are Canadian then can we comment on your countries poor immigration laws that allows known terrorists to cross into our country? Your poor health systems that force your citizens to come to our country to get care? IF you are European can we comment on the poor fiscal shape the EU is in? And IF you now live in the United States we have no laws keeping you here. So don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way back to where ever you came from.

Merry Christmas

I don't have children of my own. I work in a school almost 2,000 miles away from where this happened. That Friday, we had a snow day, and I was with two of my friends. We all work at the same school. We were lounging around on the floor, watching a movie and making goodie bags for the 5th graders when we heard the news.

My school is a private, Catholic school with less than 400 students K-12. I know every student in the high school, and a good number of the younger children as well. When I heard what had happened, my heart felt like it was breaking. I was stunned, speechless...crying as my friend read aloud one of the news reports. I wanted to go and find all of my kids and hug them. I wanted to forget every time I grew irritated with them or sent them out into the hall. I wanted them to know that even though this tragedy happened far from the doors of our school, we would stand united with the students and community of Sandy Hook.

Yes, I don't have children of my own flesh, but every student who comes through my classroom door is my child. I couldn't fathom losing a student, or a child, or a sibling in this massacre and I am not going to pretend like I understand what it is like. I don't, and I pray I never will.

I love teaching, my job, my kids...so many little details that only my fellow teacher friends get. I can't imagine what the CT community is going through. I don't know how I can help except to protect my kids from all I can with what I have.

You are right, of course.
But in the aftermath of the Newtown massacre, it is hard not to over-respond to people like some of the ones above.
Seems like they can not follow the original discussion line, gun violence in US, and either mumble, or are parroting rehearsed lines of the hard right fringe.
