Name: Sarah Goldy-Brown  

School: Emmaus High School Senior

Accomplishment: She won first place in the high school division of the Lehigh Valley Press Student Poetry Project

Key to Awesomeness: Early in 2011, Sarah wrote a poem…a special poem. She was still grieving the death of her grandmother in January. And with the death of her grandfather a few years earlier, Sarah needed to deal with the now-empty house her grandparents once lived in.

“I had recollections and feelings of her being there, but she really wasn’t,” Sarah said referring to the times she and her family began the task of sorting through her grandparents’ belongings.

Sarah started writing poetry at the age of five with the assistance of her father, Peter Brown, as a way to release her emotions, especially sad ones, she said. 

She has entered the Lehigh Valley Press Student Poetry Project the past four years, placing in the last three—this year taking first place. 

When she is not writing poetry, Sarah is busy with school activities. She is the class vice-president, Spanish Club president, Interact Club vice president, a member of the National Honor Society and participates in the school’s Habitat for Humanity activities. 

She is also active in the student leadership program in the youth group of her church, Bethany United Methodist in Wescosville.

Following graduation, Sarah plans to attend college and study communications, but hasn’t decided on a college at this time.
