Post 9/11: What Will the Next Decade Bring?

After marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, some of our friends and neighbors share their thoughts on what the next 10 years will look like.

"Like most crime, people vastly overestimate the danger of terrorism. The reality is that more Americans have died in the last 50 years drowning in toilets than have been killed by terrorists, even if you include those killed on 9/11! Terrorism will continue to be a threat over the next 10 years, and it is certainly possible that we will suffer another catastrophic attack. Far more dangerous, however, is the way in which terrorism might continue to warp our political discourse and blind policymakers to initiatives proven to save thousands of American lives a year. Such programs exist in fields as diverse as occupational safety, education, infrastructure development, environmental regulation, emergency preparedness...the list goes on and on."

"There is no question that we have to remain vigilant now and into the future. The impacts of 9/11 should continue to remind us about the severity and the widespread impact on our society caused by a faceless, senseless act of terrorism. Public Safety should remain our number one priority here in Emmaus and throughout all communities in America. I believe as Americans we can accomplish anything together as was demonstrated over and over again by the thousands of heroes involved in the 9/11 tragedies."
“What will happen in the next 10 years is anyone’s guess. But it’s a pretty safe bet that the bad guys, both foreign and domestic, will keep working on new ways to attack our country. We’ll have to be ready. Eternal vigilance really is the price of liberty. That’s why when I think of 9/11, I think mostly of Flight 93, the heroes on board, and the men and women of Station 627, the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Dept. in Shanksville, Pa. (pop. 250). The four men on the first fire truck to reach the crash site of Flight 93 were were all volunteers. When the alarm sounded, they immediately dropped what they were doing and rushed to the firehouse from work or home as they had done hundreds of times before.”
