Play Ball in Iron Pigs' Park, Help Boys & Girls Club

Easton Boys & Girls Club has teamed up with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in hosting a corporate softball tournament to benefit the Easton Boys & Girls Club.

Listen up, Emmaus Patch! If you have always wanted to play baseball or softball in a professional stadium, you are going to want to keep reading.

The Easton Boys & Girls Club has teamed up with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs for a fundraiser called "Play for Kids."

The benefit, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 6 at Coca-Cola Park, will help raise money for the club..

The idea is to get corporate sponsors -- or individual teams willing to spend $1,000 -- to field teams for the day to play softball on the field. It's the first time the park has hosted an event of this sort.

"I grew up with the Boys & Girls Club," Iron Pigs field operations director Bill Brake said at a press conference Wednesday announcing the event. "It gave me a safe place to be. It's something that's really needed now in our community."

The money will be used to help fund a $48,000 project to put in a new floor at the Boys & Girls Club gym on Easton's South Side, said club Director Dean Young.

"We're going to make that a reality," Young said.

There are already four teams that have signed up to play, including the Iron Pigs' front office and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of the Lehigh Valley. Looking around the stadium, Coca-Cola's Scott Ellmaker pointed out the numerous local companies that had helped make the ballpark happen.

"Hopefully they'll do the same thing here," he said.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers say up to 20 teams can register, allowing for two games per team throughout the day. The day will also include a sports memorabilia show, silent auctions and raffles, and other activities.
