Pennsylvania Election Results 2012

The Keystone State helped Barack Obama win re-election in what was a good night for Democrats across Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania helped President Barack Obama win re-election as U.S. Sen. Bob Casey fended off a feisty challenge from Republican coal magnate Tom Smith in what turned out to be a big night for Democrats in the Keystone State.

Democrats held the lead in three state row office races as of 2:30 a.m. Wednesday with close to 98 percent of the vote in, according to unofficial results.

Kathleen Kane, a former assistant district attorney from Lackawanna County, made history by becoming the first Democrat and first woman to be elected as the state's attorney general. The Republican candidate, David Freed, is a two-term district attorney in Cumberland County.

Democrat Eugene DePasquale of York leads Republican John Maher of Allegheny in the auditor general race.

Democratic incumbent Treasurer Rob McCord of Montgomery County won a second term by defeating Republican Diana Irey Vaughan, a county commissioner from Washington County in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Election Day was busy in eastern Pennsylvania with reports of problems and controversy and several polling places.

In Easton, signs appeared offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to voter fraud convictions. A constable for Easton’s 10th ward removed one such sign staked into the ground after consulting with an elections attorney on site. The Pennsylvania Commercial Action Network, the same group that posted “Replace ObamaCare” billboards around the state, made the signs.

ID Requests
Many Easton voters also reported poll workers asking for their IDs, even though IDs are not required for this election cycle under the law.

Matthew Keeler, press secretary for the PA Department of State, said that's part of the plan. "Voters are not required to show an ID or to have one, but they are going to be asked if they have one by poll workers."

"We view this as a soft rollout for when Pennsylvania's voter ID law is in full effect next year," Keeler said.

Voters in Newtown encountered two large signs that said “Please Have Your Photo ID Ready." A member of the local Democratic Party said she encountered the signs at 7 a.m. at the entrance to the polling line and that some people were leaving because they did not have an ID. No one at the polling place, including the election judge, claimed responsibility for posting the signs.

Challenges for Voters and Poll Watchers
In Philadelphia, Republican officials alleged that Democrats prevented 75 Republican poll watchers from accessing polling places in overwhelmingly Democratic districts. Democrats denied this, but said the poll watchers main goal wasn’t to monitor potential voter fraud, but to suppress the vote and lower turnout. A judge ordered that the poll watchers be reinstated.

In Phoenixville, a Republican poll watcher challenged the eligibility of a voter who had an “inactive” voter registration status because he hadn’t voted in five years. The man left, later returned to the polling place with his ID and was able to cast his ballot.

Viral Touchscreen Video
There also have been technical issues with voting in Pennsylvania. One voter posted this video on Youtube of a touchscreen machine apparently incorrectly registering his vote for President Barack Obama as a vote for Mitt Romney.

Hurricane Sandy is also causing problems at the polls. In Philadelphia County, commissionersstruggled to process 28,000 new registrations that came in after the hurricane caused election offices to shut down for two days.

In Montgomery County, Democratic County Commissioners Josh Shapiro, Leslie Richards, and their Republican colleague Bruce Castor said Tuesday afternoon that Election Day in the county is proceeding smoothly.

Voters Asked About Their Party Affiliation

Voters in Nazareth, Northampton County told Patch they were put off by a woman - possibly an RNC poll watcher - who asked them questions inside a polling place at Gracedale Nursing Home.

Voter Mark Cloeren said, "There was an RNC rep in the voting room asking each voter 'Republican or Democrat?' After a bit of a discussion she said she was asking whether you were registered one way or the other. But it came across more like she wanted to know how you were voting."

Another resident said the woman continued to talk with voters if they told her they were Republican. A thid voter told Patch he found the situation odd and uncomfortable.

The woman was not at the polls when a Patch editor went there. The judge of elections at the poll told Patch she didn't hear any politicking in the room and didn't know who appointed the woman.

Any party or political organization is entitled to have watchers at any primary or election.

Original Report:

Influential Pennsylvania political insiders differ on the key to winning the Keystone State for President Barack Obama or former Gov. Mitt Romney.

Republicans say the role of undecided and independent voters will be key to a Romney win, while Democrats say turning out their base is the top priority for Obama, according to Red Keystone/Blue Keystone surveys by Patch.

(50 Republicans and 29 Democrats replied to the surveys, which were sent to local officials, candidates and party leaders)

Here's how the replies broke down:

Republicans on what's more important

  • 13 - Get out the base
  • 35 - Convince undecided/independent voters

Democrats on what's more important

  • 21 - Get out the base
  • 6 - Convince undecided/independent voters

Who will win Pennsylvania?

Democrats were far more unified than GOP in their opinion of who will win Pennsylvania. Twenty-seven said Obama, while just two said Romney. Eighteen Republicans said Obama and 32 said Romney.

Who had the best ground game and ad campaign?

Democrats and Republicans both largely supported their candidate on the question of who ran the best campaign. Patch asked survey takers to assess the campaigns regardless of the respondent's partisan preference.

How did Pa. vote in 2008 presidential race?

In 2008, Pennsylvania voted Democratic with nearly 3.3 million voters, or 55 percent, casting ballots for the Obama-Biden team. Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin earned nearly 2.7 million votes. According to statistics collected by the Pennsylvania Department of State office, voter turnout tallied about 68.4 percent in 2008.

Here's a sampling of comments from our surveys:

Republicans

  • I think the results will be extremely close and will be based on turnout, yet at the same time, I believe the local elections down the ballot will be affected in results by the amount of times a person is willing to switch parties. They will for president, but the questions remains, when will they change back to their party?

  • If Pennsylvania goes to Romney, it's going to be an early election night. Looks like team R and R may have caught the president flatfooted.
  • Republicans will increase House margin from 12-7 to 13-5
  • Record voter turnout in GOP areas, average turnout in Dem areas.
  • I think voters are disappointed with how things have gone the past four years and will make that frustration heard at the polls on Tuesday.

Democrats

  • The presidential campaign has been lackluster in Pennsylvania. Obama felt that this was his state from the beginning, and Romney has not been highly involved until recently.
  • While I believe the enthusiasm for President Obama has diminished a bit since the 2008 election, I'm not seeing much enthusiasm at all for Gov. Romney.
  • I think Casey, Kane and McCord will win. Auditor General will be a nail biter and, unfortunately, I believe [U.S. Rep.] Mark Critz is going to lose. I think the Democrats will pick up a total of 4-6 seats in the State House and 1 in the State Senate.
  • Pennsylvania must institute an early voting program - similar to 37 other states.
  • I am distressed and, quite frankly, disgusted with the influence of the Super PACs on this election. Money should not buy a candidate an office and these Super PACs exist only to use their dollars to buy the office for the candidate of their choice. Their ads are, in many cases, misleading and misinformed. If those individuals have so much money, why don't they use it to help people rather than work to tear our country apart with their rhetoric?

Bless your heart! Just to let you know I did see the debate and loved both Johnson and Stein, who put in perspective the (rather small, I think) differences between the major parties. But they won't even be recognized much less have a chance of winning or even getting a newsworthy percentage. So I shall be pragmatic, not Quixotic, and cast my vote for the 'lesser of two evils'. : ) sigh...

Richard, I am sure that you have very good intentions to pass along that story that you heard..but unless you actually see who stole them and even know that they are repubs then you are not informed. Everyone knows that the name signs are worthless. They have NO affect at all on the polls. Big waste of money so why steal them. Think about which side will really cause havoc if their man does not get voted in. Really....so many democrats are either out of work or collecting welfare, they have much more time on their hands to be stealing worthless signs. The "rich" repubs are mostly out working to help pay for the welfare roles. So, unless you see the crime and know if the people stealing are even registered voters or just teens out for a "kick" ....do not report it as right wing nuts. That is just sad reporting and no news at all.

Considering two of my neighbors (one across the street on one on the right) woke up this morning to see their Obama signs gone and I saw them with my own eyes last night, I think I can speak to that theft. I also spoke with some people out in East Pikeland who had signs stolen last night. It appears some people drove around late last night and stole Obama signs. While I agree it won't make a bit of difference, I think it shows how pathetic the right wing has become as they realize that their man Romney is going to lose tonight. Their racism and hate is sickening!

While I think it would be all too easy to get into political debates here, I think the main point people were making was that as citizens, we mistakingly think we have only two choices. I think that leads to frustration and anger. I'm not sure that Democrats would be stealing Obama signs.. Especially because most Democrats would be in support of Obama. So, that may not be accurate. Also, I think that unemployment and welfare and poverty are issues that all people are struggling with.. Not just Democrats.. We're talking about issues of humanity.. Not politics.

Identification

Poll workers may ask you for a valid photo ID but you are not required to present photo ID to vote in this election.

If you do not provide the requested ID, you will be given information on the requirements for voting in 2013.

I just read a report that some PA polling places are turning away voters for not following this new voter ID law in violation of the judge's order. I hope those affected call a lawyer as soon as they get home.

Yes, the poll workers are allowed to ask for i.d. However there is nothing at the polls stating you are allowed to refuse. Further, they have literature on the table, in the middle of all the voting laws and election literature, stating that a new PA state law *REQUIRES* all voters to show a state issued i.d. This is absolutely false, unless you're a first time voter, and it doesn't make any such specification.

Enough of the racist tag because we don't want another four years of this administration. How about I base my vote on:
1. Unemployment higher than when Obama took office
2. Killing the coal industry, which supplies over 25% of our energy. What do you
think that will do to our electric bills?
3. Obama refused to allow the Keystone Pipeline to go through federal lands. The
pipeline would provide jobs for thousands and make us energy independent.
4. 43 million people on food stamps because there are not enough jobs.
5. How about the 1 million plus dollars spent on Michelle's vacations?
6. What about Standard & Poors downgrading our credit, for the first time ever.
7. What about the deficit @ $48,000/PERSON. You will pass that on to your kids.
Someone will have to pay it.

None of the reasons above have anything to do with color of skin. There are enough other reasons not to vote for four more!

Rae, Unemployment numbers are what they are not (because of President Obama) they are the result of many many years of destructive policies and the fact that those policies put the U.S. on the doorstep of a massive depression. The fact is that President Obama is the one who pulled us back from falling into a depression and we have had steady private job growth .

- Killing the coal industry? How so? The coal, oil, and gas multi-billion dollar corporations have a monopoly on energy, which is why they so vigorously oppose clean renewable energy. Simply stated they don't want competition and they are protesting capitalism. - It was Romney that shut down a coal mine.

- The Keystone Pipeline is being built for a foreign company and President Obama did NOT refuse to allow anything. There are reviews that had to be done. - Thousands of jobs... NO. Get the facts a very few permanent jobs would be created. - energy in depended...NO. All of the gas is slated to go from the refineries to Europe and China because they pay a higher price and the foreign company will make huge profits.

- The high number of people being on food stamps, most of whom are hard working Americans and much of the increased number is the result of the Governors (many who are Republicans) asked President Obama to relax the requirements to help the people in their states.

- The First Lady's "vacations" = LIE...Fact checked.

Rae, (Continued):

- Standard & Poors downgrade... That responsibility lays at the feet of Congress. The reason was do to the lack of confidence in their ability to govern.

- The deficit... Congress needs to approve a massive re-building of our infrastructure that is in extremely dangerous conditions, we need to invest in alternative energy sources as the rest of the world is already speeding by us and manufacturing those parts etc. will create many jobs. We need to fund educating the masses so we can compete with the rest of the world, and yes, we need to clean up and take care of our environment, because our children and grandchildren must have clean water, air, soil, and natural food not filled with hormones, antibiotics, and other chemically engineered food to be able to live healthy lives....without those things the concern of paying for a deficit is a non-issue.

Ed, do you know who many pipelines there already are in this nation that carry all kinds of materials through them? The Keystone Pipeline already goes through private lands. It just needs the piece of federal land to be complete. Fortunately for us, America is quite capable of building a pipeline to protect lands and people. Maybe if you had sat in the mile long gas lines of the 70's, or when gas reaches over $7.00 a gallon, you'll get it. But you won't have to wait that long to feel the pinch in your pocket. Just wait until the "Clinton" tax rates come back in January under the current administration. It made a $250/month difference in my paycheck. I guess I'll have to figure out what I need to cut to cover that again.

Such misinformation here. It is so easy to research facts, I encourage it. if your AGI is less than 250k, under Obama, your rate will not change except that the 2% less you have been paying the last 2 years in your payroll taxes, thanks to the stimulus, will go back into effect in Jan. Obamacare has allowed our son to get better coverage on our health insurance, and, according to the CBO, it will decrease the deficit by $100Billion in 10 years. We are all vulnerable to job loss, chronic disease, accidents and we don't have to worry about healthcare unless Romney, in fact, repels Obamacare.

That was before they figured out Obamacare was going to cost TWICE what they thought. WHAT FORM OF IDIOT BELIEVES ANY OF THE ESTIMATES the government puts out. Stuff always cost 4x what they say. Obamacare was supposed to be 800 billion over 4 years, then they revised it to 1.6 TRILLION. IT WILL ACTUALLY COST 6 TRILLION. AND WE WILL BE BROKE. WE WILL BE LIKE GREECE. BROKE. NO SERVICES. FINISHED. All because you STUPID democrats can't figure out that Obama has us on an unsustainable trajectory toward 70% of the citizens living off government. MORONS.

Please - a vote for Obama is a vote for the right. He is no different that Bush and only minorly different than Romney! Change the status quo - vote Green. Obama is no more a liberal than Cheney. Be strong, be proud - vote Green. Vote Jill Stein!

Don't drink the two party kool-aid - think for yourself! Vote Green! Vote Jill Stein!

Earnest, I won't convince you that Obama needs to accept responsibility for what has happened under his watch. You are misinformed on Obama not allowing the pipeline to go through federal lands. Under his EPA, the coal industry will be regulated out of business. As for renewable energy, are you talking about the following companies who got taxpayer money:

1. Solyndra - 500 Million
2. Beacon Power - 43 Million
3. A123 Systems - 248 Million
4. Abount Solar - 400 million

These are some of the companies Obama gave our (my) tax dollars to. What right does he have to gamble my tax dollars on his "hunches."

Rae, actually five different renewable energy companies that the Obama administration extended loan guarantees went bankrupt. That's 5 out of a total of 63 - roughly an 8% failure rate.

Compare that rate to the Bain Capital success rate under Romney. During Romney's tenure at Bain, 23% of the companies in which Bain invested went bankrupt - three times the rate.

Actually I'm pretty damn sure I'm a hell of a lot smarter than some trollish toolbag who hides behind a fake name, and can't even have an intelligent argument without throwing around childish arguments. Yep, I'm way f'ing smarter than you, now get back to your trailer park, drink a six pack, and resume beating your wife while blaming minorities for why your stupid ass can't find work.

p.s. I didn't even vote for B.O, dumbass.

1. Regulation of the coal industry to produce cleaner coal in an environmentally more sustainable way is a realistic goal. Energy companies should be forced to use clean coal and miners should be able to work in safer conditions. How you cannot support that is beyond me.
2. There were excesses in the renewable energy investment. Whether it is criminal or just bad investment remains to be seen. However it is a fact now that the US is behind in production of renewable energy and we need to find efficient ways to encourage its use. China now owns the solar panel market... we need to regain leadership in this area.
3. Drilling is important.. but lets do it in a way so that we do not have another oil spill like we did in the Gulf.
4. Drilling in National Parks is not going to lower the price of gas. Gas prices are going up regardless due to increased demand abroad. That fact needs to be kept in the forefront of the development of a better national energy policy.

It is too bad that Romney lost. you thought SANDY was bad. It was a wake-up call to straighten out our lives. God will not put up with us much longer and the chastisement will be harsh.
We have a leader who prompts gay marriage and murdering of innocent children.
When the chastisement starts remember you heard it first hear.
