Local Teen's Diabetes Fundraiser a Success

Vicki Klein thanks community for its generosity.

After a month of nonstop phone calling, door knocking and emailing, Vicki Klein, 17, of Emmaus, achieved great success last Sunday afternoon at the  on Jubilee Street in Emmaus.

Vicki vs. Diabetes, her fundraiser to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, brought in more than $1,300 and donations are still coming in.

More than 60 people ignored the 100-plus degree heat to attend the event, which included a scavenger hunt through Emmaus, children’s games and a Parkour class.

"The fundraiser was an amazing success because the community stepped up for a very important cause. It touched my heart," says Vicki, who has Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes, as does her sister.

It’s believed there may be a genetic component to the disease but it has not been proven.

"Diabetes is an annoyance," Vicki says. "You just push through it and do your best. Some people aren’t as fortunate as I am and haven’t been as successful with it."
