A longstanding Halloween tradition in Emmaus is about to be broken.
Trick-or-Treat night will actually happen on Halloween this year – Wednesday, Oct. 31 – instead of on a seemingly randomly allocated Thursday as has been done in the past.
According to a report on WFMZ.com, Mayor Winfield Iobst announced the date and time of Trick-or-Treat night 2012 at Tuesday night’s meeting of Emmaus Borough Council: Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. He encouraged residents who wish to participate to turn on their porch lights.

The timing of Trick-or-Treat night in Emmaus became the focus of an Emmaus Borough Council meeting in October 2011, when a high-school-aged Boy Scout in attendance asked council why Trick-or-Treat night in Emmaus is always on a Thursday, instead of on Friday or Saturday as in other areas. The young man said that Thursday night interfered with his ability to get his homework done.
Iobst told the Scout that Trick-or-Treat night in Emmaus had been on Thursday for as long as he could remember and Councilman Brent Labenberg said he thought that the Thursday night scheduling of Trick-or-Treat came from a desire to not have the Halloween-inspired quest for candy interfere with Friday night football games.
Sixty-three percent of respondents to an Emmaus Patch poll question last year asking the question “Should Emmaus Trick-or-Treat Night be moved to another night?” answered “Yes. Trick-or-treating on a school night is wrong.”
