Jenae,
Thank you for your tribute to the Perk and for encouraging readers to "shop locally" and "stay community minded." These, of course, are sentiments shared by all small businesses. But I'm at a loss as to how you reconcile this advice with the businesses you highlight in the "Frugal Family" column. Four out of five businesses you cite in this week's blurb are national corporations -- CVS, Staples, Weiss Market, Dick's Sporting Goods -- not Emmaus businesses. Any insights you can give would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Nancy, thanks for your feedback. I've been working very hard to reach out to the Emmaus Main Street Program, Shops of Emmaus, and the new Shop Local, Shop Emmaus groups to ask local businesses to contact me for specials in our area. However, I have had very few respond, so I'm forced to look in weekly circulars for 'deals' in our area. I have to list five deals each week. If I'm able to find one independent business who will give me a 'deal', I'm lucky.

I don't recall seeing you at the Meet & Greet last week, but I made an announcement to everyone that I would love to highlight all local businesses where possible. I've made efforts to call and email local businesses only to be asked to call back later or not have my messages returned, which is discouraging. I always tell them it's FREE advertising, but they must think there's a catch.

I've posted messages all over Facebook groups (including SOE, EMSP, and SLSE), but have only received a special from Donna at Emmaus Jewel Shop, a craft special at Cottage and a sale at The Finish Line. When time allows, I try to walk in town to talk face-to-face, but with small children and several jobs, it's not always easy to do things that way.

If you could help me spread the word that I am ALWAYS seeking specials, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for anything you can contribute!
