Emmaus FD Plans to buy dog for Girl Hurt in Duplex Fire

An 11-year-old girl was injured trying to save her dog in a New Year's Eve blaze that destroyed her home in Emmaus.

Normally, firefighters are finished helping the victims of a fire when the last hose is wound up and the fire truck heads back to the station.

Emmaus firefighters are not your normal firefighters.

After battling a Dec. 31 blaze that destroyed a duplex on East Main Street in Emmaus that left two families homeless, the members of the Emmaus Fire Department decided they needed to do something further to help the victims of the fire - Katherine and Gerald Maury and Jarred Goeppert and his 11-year-old daughter Jada.

In particular, the firefighters have focused their efforts on Jada, who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, breathing with the help of a ventilator through Wednesday. Jada was injured in an effort to save her Great Dane. The dog died in the fire.

The Emmaus firefighters have taken up a collection to buy Jada a new dog when she is ready, according to Lt. Bob Schwoyer of the Emmaus Fire Department.

Plus, the firefighters have organized a donation drive to benefit Jada and her dad, as well as the Maurys. Community members can drop off items for the families on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire station, 100 N. Sixth Street.

Schwoyer has taken a lead role in promoting the drive, which was initially planned to solicit clothing donations. According to Schwoyer, the response from the community has been incredible and the firefighters have already collected a great deal of clothing for both families.

As a result, he says, the fire department is now working with the Red Cross to ensure that donations received beyond what the Emmaus families can use will be distributed to other needy families in the area.

In addition to toys for Jada who lost all of her Christmas presents in the blaze, the firefighters are asking for toiletries and small household items. Plus, they hope people who want to help will consider donating gift cards for local restaurants or grocery stores.

Beyond that, he says, both families could use donations of pet supplies or gift cards for pet stores. (The Maurys also have a dog.) The firefighters are also trying to find a local veterinarian willing to donate services to the families as they get back on their feet.

Jada was still hospitalized at the time of this writing, although Schwoyer said it is possible that she could be released from the hospital late Thursday. If not, the expectation is that she will be sent home Friday, he said.

How about saving another life and adopting a dog instead of buying one?

Great idea HC! I believe there is a great dane rescue in the area if they are interested in another dane. Here is the website for Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue: http://www.padanerescue.com/adoptadane.html.

HC and Sharon, Although I do support the adoption option, I think there should be nothing but praises for the EFD members of taking the inititive for even thinking of the little girl and her recovery. They could of just left things alone and let the families figure it out but they didnt and are giving her the choice of what she wants.

Great job to the firefighters on looking to replace the dog for the girl. Honestly I do agree with HC about adopting over purchasing, and for the pets sake, and to eliminate the stress on the pet, I would wait till they are back into a home of their own or they have new permanent living to put a pet into the home. They are probably going through alot and that would just be an added living thing to care for, plus it puts alot of stress on the pet. Unfortunatly even though heartbreaking to the girl, she is old enough to understand some things have to wait.

Plus going through adoption not only will you save another life they will work with the vetting costs. I know lehigh county humane society offers low cost vetting, I also adopted our cat from peaceable kingdom, they do offer low cost vets, however I choose to use emmaus animal hospital. But if I needed to the vetting is there and if anything severe would go wrong they would help with the vet bill to save her.

Please note that Jada's clothing sizes were originally publicized incorrectly. Here are her correct sizes: Pants, kids size 10; shirts, kids size 6; Shoe, kids size
9.

Does anyone know if the 2 families need dishes? I have an extra set of stoneware for 4. I just don't want to duplicate if they were already donated.

I thought the same thing too Donna. I dropped off items today and was informed that after the donations are collected, the family will come by and chose what they want and the remaining items donated to Good Will (or the like). I believe they will also have a free storage unit to place household items that they will need once their house is rebuilt (the paramedic stated that typically in these cases the family will live in a furnished apartment). A large outpouring of support is expected, which is really nice.
