It took more than the week that the East Penn Superintendent of Schools promised back in November, but East Penn parents should now have an emergency bus plan in hand.

At a Nov. 14 school board meeting, Thomas L. Seidenberger told the board that he had been working with the school district’s bus company, First Student to create an emergency bus stop plan and that plan would be mailed to all families the East Penn School District about a week later.

School buses were again the topic of conversation at the Dec. 12 school board meeting.

Seidenberger again told the board that the district was working to get ahead of Mother Nature, creating an emergency bus plan with specific guidelines, such as if an emergency bus stop was enacted in the morning, that bus stop would remain in effect for the afternoon, to hopefully minimize confusion for parents and caregivers.

He also said that the district is now well aware of which roadways typically flood. As a result, in the future, the district will streamline its use of the telephone alert system when putting an emergency bus route in effect, only contacting those households impacted by the flooding and busing change.

“We will have a call made for just those areas,” Seidenberger said. “We don’t want to wake up everyone at 5:30 a.m.

“Because of the serious nature of the information, we’ll be sending it out in paper form,” he said.

The district has made an effort to go paperless this year, for both financial and environmental reasons.
