My family and I attended a daylong outdoor summer festival in Emmaus on Saturday known as Emmaus Community Day and from start to finish, the event was a lesson in old-fashioned fun.

There was the dunk tank and the face painting. There were the hot dogs and the soft pretzels. There was the Old-Timer baseball game and a pretty cool skateboard demo.

And, in terms of kids’ crafts, there were a bevy of things for the kids to do that were all simple and offered free of charge.

My boys, during the six hours we were in Emmaus Community Park on Saturday, hit pretty much every one of these free craft booths.

Some of their favorite craft activities were the seed bomb-making activity offered by the Emmaus Garden Club and a leather coin purse kit given out by the Girl Scouts.

Remember that leather wallet folks? Or was it, perhaps, a leather comb holder for dad?

My dad got one and he didn’t even have hair. At least his comb was safe though.

My boys got so much enjoyment making their little leather wallets and I got such a kick strolling down memory lane about the numerous leather hand-stitched projects that I made as a child, that I poked around online to see what similar craft project ideas I could find to do with them.

While I didn’t find the DIY-type project instructions that I was hoping for, I did discover that there are many online stores that specialize in leather project craft kits for kids. The prices seemed pretty reasonable, so I may order a few and put them away for a rainy day.

After all, my dad still doesn’t have hair, but it’s high time he got a new comb holder.
